He's Still Clifford To Me

For 2 1/2 years I have had a little squirrel named Clifford who befriended me when I bought my new home. He would sit with me on the deck outside and nibble on pecans as I worked at the computer or tended to my potted flowers. He would disappear for a few months at a time….here and there, but he always returned, and made it clear this was his home too. I built him his own home as well as a saloon where he could sit and enjoy his snacks in the peacefulness of his own surroundings.

This year brought about some curious changes. He disappeared the end of March…..but didn't return as usual in May. However, two adorable 'lttles' showed up in June, and made themselves right at home.
This was unusual because Clifford guarded his territory with vigor and no one was ever allowed to share his home or his saloon. At times, other squirrels would duck in and out, in the hopes of stealing some of his goodies but it was a rare occasion when they succeeded.
These 'littles' seemed very much at home…..even spending time in Cliffords house.
My conclusion was that Clifford was not returning and somehow these new 'littles' had arrived to ease my heart and take his place. I was very sad, and missed Clifford so much, but I embraced the new 'littles' and starting leaving treats out for them too.
In late July, to my surprise, Clifford returned!!. However, some noticeable changes became apparent.
After carefully observing him on video clips, I noticed a recent, very obvious boob enhancement. Six boobs to be exact. All of them very red and puffy.

And even more curious he was sharing his space with the two new littles.
It was then that I realized….my little Clifford was in fact, not a he……but a she.
And these two littles….were her babies.
As the three of them all negotiated their favorite spots on the property, Clifford has gone back to hanging out mostly in her home, and the 'littles' seem to prefer the saloon on the upper deck.
Within the last month, Clifford's nipples have healed, and she has put some weight back on.
They don't spend much time all together , but there are no territorial issues when one crosses into another ones ‘space’.
Regardless of how long Clifford has been a ‘he’ to me....he is in fact a ‘she’.
But ‘she’ will always be Clifford…..to me.
And now they are a family of three! (Bring it on Dr. Seuss)
Love is love.
Two legged or four.
Open the door…..there’s always room for more.
But thats just my opinion. :)
